The Evolution of Handleless Kitchens

Sleek Lines Have Always Been On Trend

This style may sound like a futuristic idea but they have been around as long as the fitted kitchen has - and they've been consistently popular too!

From the new wave high-rise projects in London, through to Germanic retail outlets and now used in almost every kitchen style, handleless kitchens have made their mark.

The handleless kitchens of today are sleek and minimalist but that hasn’t always been the case. Those from the 1950s had recessed handles, so not protruding or attached to the front of the doors. But certainly different to what we consider to be handleless today.

Things developed somewhat from the 1960s onwards when the aluminium profile was introduced. And then German kitchen designs in the 1980s featured a continuous aluminium profile, leading to a more modern, fresh look.

Since then, handleless kitchens have established themselves as kitchen favourites. Their minimalist look creates a streamlined, elegant appeal that fits in with today’s lifestyle and kitchen style aspirations. They’re versatile too – we can design handleless kitchens in our Maine and Jefferson Shaker kitchens or in the slab door styles that include Horizon, Jackson and Hamilton. In fact, any of the Paula Rosa kitchens can be handleless with the exception of Manhattan that has a J-pull in the doors.

We love the current trend of including coloured gola rails – that’s the small section between the work surface and cupboard doors that lets you get your fingers behind the doors and drawers to open them. The coloured gola rail creates an accent that makes the lines really pop, adding some depth to a linear kitchen.

Our current gola rail offering is extending (hurrah!) and we’re bringing more colour into our catalogue as part of our Autumn launch. They’ll be available in black, brass and our standard silver. Why not add a pop of colour to your streamlined handleless kitchen?
