Rethinking resources and redefining kitchens

This year’s Interzum 2025 in Cologne was a powerful showcase of innovation, sustainability, and forward-thinking design. With the guiding theme “Rethinking Resources: Circular and Biobased Solutions,” the event placed the circular economy at the heart of the furniture and interior design industry’s future.
One of the most inspiring aspects was the spotlight on biocircular materials—from furniture made of hemp and recycled leather to handles made from marine plastic waste. These innovations are not only reducing environmental impact but also challenging the traditional materials used in kitchen and home design.
The show also emphasized rethinking kitchen design in response to modern living. As urban spaces shrink and consumer expectations evolve, the value of space has never been more critical. Concepts like Häfele’s Dynamic Living module—featuring movable walls and modular furnishings—demonstrated how flexible, compact living can be both stylish and sustainable.
A key topic of conversation was the impact of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Furniture manufacturers are now being called to design with disassembly, recyclability, and material traceability in mind. While this presents challenges, it also opens doors to innovation and long-term value creation.
From a personal perspective, I was fortunate to attend and found the experience both inspiring and informative. It was energizing to see how our industry is not only adapting to global challenges but actively shaping a more sustainable and intelligent future.
Interzum 2025 wasn’t just a trade fair—it was a glimpse into what’s next. And it’s clear: the future of furniture is circular, space-savvy, and deeply rooted in responsible design.
